Lecture series WS 25/26
Modern Earth system sciences—complex, digital, interdisciplinary
We would like to thank all speakers for their fascinating presentations!
We would also like to thank everyone who attended, listened and asked insightful questions.
Description
Human intervention in the Earth system has made humanity a crucial component, making an understanding of the systematic interrelationships within the geosciences extremely important. At the University of Cologne, with its institutes of geophysics, meteorology, geography, geology, and mineralogy, as well as computer science and mathematics, the topic of “Intelligent Methods in Earth System Sciences” is highlighted as one of the university's nine key profile areas. We revisit this interdisciplinary field of research in this lecture series.
Eight lectures—including a total of four inaugural lectures by junior professors—provide an overview of various approaches and disciplines that explore the Earth system. Topics include research into the Earth's critical zone, atmospheric chemistry and energy meteorology, and agricultural value chains in Africa.
This includes the presentation of methods in geoscientific research that utilize the natural sciences, humanities, and computer sciences, because the Earth is a complex system that cannot be explained without a digital approach and interdisciplinary research.
This lecture series is coordinated by the Key profile area (KPA) "Intelligent Methods for Earth System Sciences".
Target group
The target group is students from all degree programs, guest students, Ph.D. students, and interested members of the public. No prior knowledge is required.
The eight lectures will be presented by various speakers. No registration is required to attend the lectures, unless you wish to earn credits for this course as part of your Studium Integrale program. In this case, you must register in KLIPS and create a video clip of approximately three minutes on a selected lecture.
Further information in KLIPS - LV-Nummer 14904.3602.
Five lectures will be held in English and three in German.
Videos
The video clips created by students on selected topics from the previous lecture series are linked on this page. They are all in German.
Date and location
The lectures take place approximately every 14 days, on Mondays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. in the Geo/Bio lecture hall at Zülpicher Str. 49a, Building 310c.
