Prof. Dr. Peter Düben is now an honorary professor at the University of Cologne. The certificate was presented by Prof. Georg Bareth, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, on 8 May 2024 at the Institute of Geophysics and Meteorology. Peter Düben has been working at ECMWF, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, since 2016, where he has been Head of the Earth System Modelling Department since 2022. In research topics related to the development of weather and climate simulations and machine learning in Earth system science, he successfully collaborates with the scientists of the UoC's Meteorology Department and the CESOC, the Centre for Earth System Observation and Computational Analysis. He has already held and continues to hold courses within CESOC and the Master's programme ‘Physics of the Earth Atmosphere’ at the UoC. Quota from Peter Düben:
"I am delighted to accept this special title. The dual role as Head of the Department of Earth System Modelling at the ECMWF and as Honorary Professor at the University of Cologne will help me to further strengthen the bridges between the two institutes, to link university research and research on operational weather models more closely, and to give new impulses to students with practice-oriented teaching. I am very much looking forward to working more closely with students and scientists at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and in particular at the Institute of Geophysics and Meteorology."
